What is comfort food?
What is comfort food? It is a hard question for many people to answer: the term is vague, unprecise. Why? Well, mostly because of the simple fact that if something is comforting for someone, it may be a completely different story for someone else.
By definition, comfort food is cheap and simple. People rely on it mainly for the sentiment of emotional security it procures, or the souvenirs it may evocate (usually childhood souvenirs).Think about that stew your grand-mother would cook Sunday afternoons, or that comforting chicken noodle soup your mother would brew everytime you caught a cold.
It is a trend that plays on the memory of your senses over a dish, to give you a sensation of appeasement and security. It is a food that is bound to emotions, that we enjoy to share with our families.
Popular examples of comfort foods in the United States are the common pizza, chili, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, apple pie, ice cream, hamburgers, and so much more.
In Canada there is the famous Poutine, which consists in french fries covered with cheese curds and topped with a special brown sauce. There are different sort of toppings for a Poutine, ground beef and onions, chopped bacon, pepperoni and green peppers, just to name a few. Meat pies (commonly known as “tourtière”), meat bread, pork leg stew, meatball stew, are also part of the list.
